Ross House, Ross, Co. Meath

It is a small building doing a good deal architecturally, and the effect is one of quiet confidence rather than show.

The house dates to around 1780, a detached two-storey block built in dressed limestone with a hipped slate roof and ashlar limestone chimneystacks rising from it. The portico, with its Ionic columns and entablature, would have announced the status of the household within to anyone approaching the front door, a common enough ambition for country houses of the period, though rarely carried off with this much carved stone detailing on so modest a footprint. Timber sash windows, set into ashlar limestone dressings, run along the front, and the entrance itself retains a fanlight and side lights framing the door, a semicircular glazed panel above the doorway that let daylight into the hall beyond, a refinement typical of later Georgian building. The doors themselves are replacements in timber, but they follow the proportions of the surviving fanlight and side lights rather than working against them. Around the house, the stables and outbuildings that would once have supported its daily running remain part of the setting, giving some sense of the working estate that surrounded the main block rather than leaving it isolated.

What survives at Ross House is less a grand statement than a well-preserved example of restraint married to detail, the kind of building where the interest lies in close observation of stonework and joinery rather than scale. The carved limestone, the sash windows, and the fanlight together give a reasonably complete picture of how a country house of this size was finished in the late eighteenth century, before later renovations or expansions might have altered such details elsewhere.
