Rockingham House, Rockingham Demesne, Co. Roscommon

A concrete viewing tower, the Moy Lurg Tower, now rises from the old basement floor, a modern addition standing among walls built to carry a mansion that no longer exists above them. Four tunnel openings lead off from this foundation, their barrel vaulted passageways, curved brick ceilings built like an inverted U to bear the weight of earth above, still catching daylight through lightwells cut down from the surface.

The house itself was built around 1810 to designs by John Nash, the architect later responsible for much of Regency London, and it was regarded in its day as among the finest in Ireland. Little of that reputation can be read from the tunnels directly, but their scale and finish suggest a household run on a considerable scale. One tunnel runs north, joined by a smaller ancillary passage, to a set of mooring quays; another runs east, similarly joined, to the main harbour and an icehouse, a structure used before mechanical refrigeration to store ice cut from lakes or ponds for use in food storage through the warmer months. Along the way are small rooms and stores opening off the main passages, evidence of a service system built to move produce, fuel and people out of sight of the main house. The eastern tunnel's entrance is marked by a cut limestone opening flanked by arcaded stores, arched recesses that would have held goods or equipment.

Together with the estate's surviving stables, temple, icehouse, lodges, gates and church, this underground circuit forms part of a wider group of structures that once served Rockingham's demesne, the enclosed lands attached to a great house. Walking the tunnels today means tracing the logistics of a vanished estate: the quiet infrastructure of quays, ice stores and covered passages that kept a Regency household functioning, long after the house they served has gone.
