Howth Castle, Howth Road, Howth, Co. Dublin

A circular, single-bay building of two storeys stands within the walls of a kitchen garden at Howth Castle, its rubble stone construction giving little away about its original purpose.

The most likely explanation is that it began life as a dovecote, a purpose-built structure for keeping pigeons, once a practical source of fresh meat and eggs for a large estate household, particularly through winter months when other food was scarce. Its round plan would have suited that function well, allowing nesting boxes to be arranged efficiently around the internal walls, though the building has long since fallen out of use and is now partly derelict.

The structure dates to around 1750, making it a relatively late addition to the wider Howth Castle demesne, and it was later drawn into a more extensive enclosure when a rubble stone wall was built around 1840. That wall follows an L-shaped plan and encloses the kitchen garden to which the older circular building is attached, a common arrangement on Irish estates where earlier freestanding structures were absorbed into later phases of walled horticultural planning. The combination of the two build dates, a full century apart, gives the corner of the garden a slightly layered feel, with the older, rounder form sitting somewhat apart in character from the straighter lines of the Victorian-era walling around it.

Today the building's disused state means there is little to see beyond its shell and setting, but the circular form itself is worth pausing over as a reminder of how estate gardens once combined ornament with practical food production, dovecotes, kitchen gardens, and enclosing walls all serving the working life of a country house rather than merely its appearance.
