Saint Peter’s Well, Peterswell, Co. Galway

A village named after a well is a small enough thing to pass unnoticed, but Peterswell in County Galway owes its name directly to the small stone structure standing at its centre.

The building itself, a single-cell chamber with a gabled front, carries an inscribed date of 1840, yet the well it shelters is considerably older, and it is the well rather than the building that gave the place its identity.

The structure is unassuming: rubble limestone walls, a pitched roof of stone flags, and a square-headed doorway on the south-east side, above which the limestone plaque bears its date. Inside, the well itself remains the focus, exactly as it would have been for generations before anyone thought to build a roof over it. Holy wells like this one occupied a curious middle ground in Irish tradition, sites that carried the outward forms of Christian devotion, dedications to saints, rounds of prayer, while retaining an older layer of belief rooted in pre-Christian reverence for water sources. That overlap is part of what made such wells so persistent and so central to community life; they were places where the boundary between the parish's Christian present and its pagan past was never entirely fixed. Saint Peter's Well seems to fit this pattern closely, functioning less as a purely religious site than as a genuine focal point, spiritual and social both, for the people of the surrounding townland.

The 1840 chamber is best understood as a relatively late addition to a much older tradition, a formalising gesture rather than a foundation. Whatever devotional practices had drawn people to this spot before that date, the decision to enclose the well in stone reflects a moment when the site's importance was already well established, secure enough in the local imagination that it had already lent its name to the village growing up around it.
