Clashawaun Works, Ballycumber Road, Clara, Co. Offaly

A carved keystone above a carriage arch gives the game away: "Clashawaun Works 1873," cut into limestone above a doorway built to let carts pass straight through the building.

This was not a house or a mill in the ordinary sense but a working factory, and the detail that survives on its facade, quoins, sash windows, brick surrounds, tells you something about the seriousness with which its builders regarded the enterprise inside.

Clashawaun Works formed part of the jute factory established in Clara by Messrs J. & L.F. Goodbody in 1865, one of the ventures that brought industrial-scale textile processing to the Irish midlands in the second half of the nineteenth century. Jute, a coarse plant fibre imported chiefly from Bengal, was spun into sacking and coarse cloth, and the Goodbody operation grew into a significant employer in the town. The building that survives is the former spinning section, a long single-storey range with two-storey warehouses set behind it, dating from between 1865 and 1873. Its construction mixes random coursed stone walling with red brick surrounds at the windows and doors, limestone quoins at the corners, and segmental-headed openings fitted with timber sash windows, a combination that suggests a builder working to a practical brief but unwilling to skimp on finish. The roofline is treated differently front and back: a limestone parapet conceals the roof from the street, while pitched roofs cover the rear ranges, an arrangement common enough in factory architecture of the period, where the public face was given more formal treatment than the working spaces behind it. The carriage arch through the centre of the building, wide enough for horse-drawn transport, was the practical heart of the complex, moving raw jute in and finished goods out, and its keystone carries the only explicit date on the structure, 1873, presumably marking the completion of this particular range rather than the founding of the wider enterprise eight years earlier.
