That orientation is the first oddity worth noticing: mills of this kind were built to serve rivers, yet the structure that actually fronted the River Shannon is gone entirely, leaving only this later range to mark where the working buildings once stood. What survives is essentially the roadside face of an industrial complex whose functional heart has disappeared, a reversal that gives the place a slightly unbalanced, off-kilter presence in the landscape.

Milling on this site goes back to the 1600s, though the building standing today was constructed in 1804, a multiple-bay structure with a lean-to addition on its south-east side. The walls are rubble limestone rendered over, finished with limestone quoins at the corners, a common way of squaring off an otherwise rough stone building. Camber-headed windows, meaning window openings with a very shallow arch rather than a flat top, are dressed with red brick surrounds laid in a block-and-start pattern, alternating projecting and recessed bricks that add texture and a slight formality to an otherwise utilitarian design. A red brick chimneystack rises from the north-east gable, and a render cornice runs along the roofline, a modest decorative flourish on a building otherwise built for work rather than display. The lean-to on the north-west side has its own square-headed doorway, again finished in red brick. Disused now, the building nonetheless keeps its original tall, simple massing largely intact, which is presumably why it still reads so clearly as an industrial structure despite the loss of its riverside counterpart.

Two centuries of milling activity on the Shannon, stretching back to the seventeenth century, sit behind this single surviving range, and the building's continued presence on the roadside gives passers-by a rare, physical point of contact with that older economy of grain, water power, and rural trade, even with the mill itself long silent and its river-facing half vanished from the site altogether.
