Mill House, Rossnaree, Co. Meath

The building stands vacant now, its window openings blocked and its rubble stone walls exposed to weather, yet the machinery of its former purpose has not entirely disappeared.

On the north-east elevation the remains of a mill wheel and its mill race, the channel that once diverted water from the river to turn the wheel, are still visible, a rare survival where so much of this kind of industrial fabric has been stripped away or collapsed entirely.

Built around 1820, the mill was one of a number of works that grew up along the River Boyne to take advantage of its flow for power. The building is a detached, gable-fronted structure of two bays and three storeys, with a hipped slate roof that, despite the mill's overall decline, remains largely intact. That the roof has survived is notable in itself; slate roofs are often the first casualty of neglect once a building loses its function, and their loss usually accelerates the collapse of everything beneath. Here, the roof's persistence has helped preserve internal features that might otherwise have been lost, even as the openings below have been blocked and the walls left bare to the rubble stone construction beneath.

The mill's condition, poor as it is, gives it a particular kind of value as evidence. Few structures illustrate as directly the practical business of harnessing a river for industrial power as one where the wheel and race can still be traced on the ground. The Boyne supported a range of milling activity in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and buildings like this one, three storeys tall and built to a plain, functional design, were the ordinary infrastructure of that economy rather than its showpieces. It is precisely because so many of them have vanished without trace that a surviving mill race, even in ruin, carries weight.
