Gilbertstown Mills, Clongowly, Co. Westmeath

On the western side, a modest two-storey structure with cut limestone door surrounds, some finished with projecting keystones, gives away more architectural ambition than a small rural mill would usually bother with. Across the water, a five-bay, three-storey block rises in plainer but more confident lines, the kind of scale that suggests whoever built it was making money and expected to keep making it. Both are built of the same coursed limestone, quarried locally, which has let the complex settle into its surroundings rather than announce itself against them.

The earlier building dates to around 1800 and was probably the original corn mill, its window openings trimmed with flush cut stone surrounds and its door treated to that unusual block-and-start keystone detail, an embellishment more often seen on gentry buildings than on working mill structures. The larger three-storey range across the race followed around 1840, extending the operation into woollen processing as well as corn, and its sheer bulk against the modest older building tells its own story of expansion and confidence. Gilbertstown Mills was one of several such enterprises strung along the River Glore in County Westmeath, a watercourse evidently reliable and powerful enough to be worth harnessing repeatedly along its length. Traces of the machinery that once turned here survive inside, timber and cast-iron fittings and the remains of two waterwheels, giving some sense of how the place actually worked rather than just how it looked from outside.

Roofs are pitched and slated, with projecting eave courses and fragments of cast-iron rainwater goods still clinging on, while the three-storey building even kept some of its cast-iron roof lights. Windows throughout have lost most of their glazing, though remnants of three-over-six pane timber sashes survive on the newer building and diamond-pane cast-iron frames on the older one, a detail that hints at how differently the two phases were finished despite being part of the same working complex. The whole site sits north of Castlepollard, not far from the house once occupied by the mill's owner, derelict now but still legible as a working landscape, one building answering the other across the same stretch of water that once powered them both.
