The gable-fronted entrance bay pushes forward assertively, and above it a string course, a horizontal band of stone cut in to break the wall's flatness, runs along like a deliberate flourish rather than a structural necessity. It is the kind of detail that costs money and serves no purpose beyond signalling that this was a building meant to impress as well as function.

The station was built around 1860 by the Great Southern Railways as part of the Sligo to Westport line, and it sits to the south-east of Castlerea as one element in a larger railway complex. Coursed cut limestone walls, finished with a tooled stone cornice, give the structure the kind of solidity that nineteenth-century railway companies favoured when they wanted a station to look permanent, an assurance in stone that the line itself was here to stay. The segmental-arched doorway, its curve shallower than a full arch, is framed in the same chamfered tooled limestone as the window surrounds, and the timber double door beneath, with its panelled front and glazed platform side, still carries an overlight to throw daylight into the hall. Red brick chimneystacks rise from a hipped slate roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods, gutters and downpipes cast rather than pressed, run its edges. On the platform side, a canopy shelters passengers under corrugated plastic sheeting held up by cast-iron brackets, their ironwork shaped with a decorative flair that goes well beyond what mere weatherproofing required.

The boundary treatment repays a second look: a random coursed wall, meaning the stones are fitted together without a regular pattern, is capped in limestone, and the entrance is marked by cut stone piers with chamfered corners and pyramidal caps, still fitted with their timber gates. Together with the replacement timber windows set into their original chamfered limestone surrounds, these details point to a station building where the masonry and ironwork were never treated as afterthoughts, even on a rural stretch of line built to link Sligo with Westport.
