Clonmel Railway Station, Prior Park Road, Thomas Street, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary

Railway architecture of the mid-nineteenth century tended toward functional restraint, but here the design runs to round-headed openings, dressed limestone surrounds with keystones, and a silhouette that reads as much like a campanile as a place to catch a train. The result is a building that functions as a landmark in the townscape quite apart from its practical purpose, its Italianate detailing setting it apart from the plainer stock of Irish station houses.

The station was built in 1852, its design possibly the work of J.S. Mulvany, an architect associated with several distinctive railway commissions of the period. The main block is a detached three-bay, two-storey structure, joined by a single-bay link to a three-bay single-storey house built for the station master, its gabled end bays advancing to either side. Snecked limestone walls, tooled quoins, and a moulded string course give the station a solidity in keeping with its civic presence, while cut limestone chimneystacks and a limestone eaves course with brackets carry the same care through to the roofline. A flat-roofed canopy on decorative cast-iron brackets shelters the centre of the trackside elevation, a practical answer to Irish weather rendered in the same ornamental vocabulary as the rest of the building. Segmental-arched window openings, tripled at ground floor level in the end bays, and a panelled timber entrance door with its own overdoor and keystone, all point to a level of architectural ambition unusual for a building whose primary job was moving passengers and goods.

What makes the site especially worth lingering over is the survival of its supporting cast: the footbridge, signal box, and goods shed that would once have been common accompaniments to any working station but which have vanished from most. Their presence alongside the station and its rubble boundary walls means the ensemble can still be read together, rather than as an isolated fragment of what was once a fuller railway landscape.
