A gable-fronted block flanked by two low wings of unequal length is not the shape most people expect of a railway station, yet that asymmetry is exactly what gives this one its character.
The central two-storey section, with its steep slate roof and timber bargeboards, is bookended by a three-bay single-storey range to the west and a shorter two-bay range to the east, each treated slightly differently in its detailing. Limestone walls, dressed and coursed, sit against rendered surfaces and brick dressings around several of the window and door openings, a combination that gives the building more visual interest than its modest size might suggest. Cast-iron rainwater goods and a mix of rendered and brick chimneystacks complete a composition that was clearly designed with some care, even for a stop of middling importance on a busy trunk line.
The station was built around 1849 on the line linking Dublin Heuston and Cork Kent, a route operated by the Great Southern and Western Railway, one of the major forces in Irish railway construction during the nineteenth century. Its window openings show a variety of treatments across the building; the central block has square-headed windows with limestone sills, the east range follows suit more plainly, while the west block combines square-headed openings with brick block-and-start surrounds, a decorative technique in which brick voussoirs alternate with stone blocks around an opening. A camber-headed doorway on the west block, also framed in brick block-and-start work, retains this detailing despite a replacement timber door. The station no longer serves its original function, but the fabric that survives, right down to the plinth course running along the base of the west block's limestone walls, still speaks clearly of its Victorian railway origins. It also reads as part of a wider group of related structures nearby, including a railway bridge and a footbridge, which together give a fuller sense of how the station once operated within its immediate setting.
