Manorhamilton Railway Station, Station Road, Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim

A six-bay stretch of railway station, roofless of its original slates but still wearing its Victorian dress of red and yellow brick, sits at the edge of Manorhamilton doing nothing more dramatic these days than housing a family.

No trains have called here in decades, yet the platform-side details, the segmental-headed window openings, the alternating brick surrounds, remain legible enough that anyone who knows what to look for can still read "railway station" in the stonework, even with net curtains in the windows.

The building dates from around 1880, raised as part of the Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway, a line that once threaded through this corner of the north-west connecting towns that had little other fast access to the outside world. Its walls are rock-faced limestone, quarried locally and left with a rough, unsmoothed face rather than dressed smooth, trimmed at the corners with yellow brick quoins and a plinth course running along the base. The door and window openings carry the same red and yellow brickwork in alternating bands around their segmental arches, a decorative flourish typical of railway architecture of the period, when even a modest rural halt was given some ornamental attention. The roof has since been replaced with pantiles, and the chimneystacks rebuilt in brick and rendered over, so what stands today is a layered thing, part original fabric, part later repair, rather than a frozen period piece. Extensions to the rear and a rendered boundary wall enclosing a garden mark its long conversion from public transport infrastructure to private house.

What makes the building worth pausing over is less its architecture in isolation than what it represents locally: a physical trace of the railway network that once linked Manorhamilton to the wider region, at a time when the line itself was as much a social artery as an economic one, carrying people, post, and produce in and out of a town otherwise tucked into hill country. The station's survival as a dwelling, rather than a ruin or a car park, means that stretch of the old line is still, in a modest way, part of everyday life in the town rather than simply a memory of one.
