Station House, Pallas Grean (New), Co. Limerick

The station's H-shaped plan, a two-storey block flanked by lower single-storey wings, is a distinctive footprint for what was, in essence, a minor stop on a rural route, and its survival gives a fuller sense of how these small stations actually worked than the platform-and-nameplate remains found elsewhere.

The building dates from around 1848 and was constructed for the Great Southern and Western Railway as part of its Limerick to Waterford line. That company was one of the major forces in Irish railway building during the nineteenth century, and this stop was a modest link in a network that once reached into almost every county before large parts of it were dismantled in the twentieth century. The two-storey end bay, with its rendered quoins and platband, would have combined living accommodation with station business, while the single-storey block handled the more everyday functions of ticketing and waiting. To the east sits the goods shed, built of rubble limestone with dressed quoins and a canopy on its north side, camber-headed doorways trimmed in limestone voussoirs, a reminder that these stations existed as much for freight and produce as for passengers. The rendered piers at the north entrance, topped with ball finials and fitted with cast-iron gates, along with a cast-iron plaque on the west pier, add a note of formality to what was otherwise a plain working building.

The platform and tracks remain to the south of the station, though the line itself is no longer in use, and the site is best understood as a fragment of a much larger nineteenth-century rail system rather than a functioning stop. What makes it worth seeking out is less any single feature than the completeness of the ensemble, station house, goods shed, gate piers and platform all surviving together, which is increasingly rare for stations of this size and status.
