Youghal Railway Station, Front Strand, Youghal, Co. Cork

The façade, laid in Flemish bond (a pattern where each course alternates header and stretcher bricks, prized for its neat, chequered appearance), is dressed with an ornate eaves course that turns a purely functional structure into something with genuine artistic ambition. Round-headed window and door openings, a render plinth course, and what was once a triple arcade at the front all point to a design brief that went well beyond simply sheltering passengers from the rain. The station now stands disused, its platforms reduced to fragments edged in limestone coping, but the architectural intent is still legible in the brick.

The building dates from around 1860, a period when Youghal was being remade by the arrival of the railway. Before the line came, the town's seaside setting was largely incidental to its economy; afterwards, it became the point of the place. Day trippers and holiday makers arrived in numbers that would have been unthinkable a generation earlier, and the station itself, with its breakfront to the rear and its decorative brick eaves, was built to announce the town's new status as a fashionable resort rather than merely to process rail traffic. The effect rippled outward into the streets nearby, where villa style houses, the kind of detached, ornamented dwellings favoured by the Victorian middle classes on holiday or in search of one, sprang up in the same part of town in the decades that followed. Station, signal box, and platforms were conceived as a single ensemble, and the survival of that grouping, even in its present disused state, gives some sense of how tightly the railway and the resort town were bound together in the late nineteenth century.
