Geashill Railway Station, Ard, Co. Offaly

A railway station built to move cattle, not people, tells you something about how rural Ireland actually worked in the nineteenth century.

Geashill's platform buildings look almost ecclesiastical, with pointed-arched windows and steep gables, yet the real business conducted here was livestock: at its busiest, around fifty wagonloads of cattle left the station each day, enough traffic to justify purpose-built pens alongside the line. Passengers came and went too, but it was the beasts that kept the sidings full.

The station opened in 1856 on the Athlone Branch of the Great Southern and Western Railway, on the stretch of line running between Portarlington and Tullamore, and served the estate village of Geashill and the farmland around it. Passenger services ended in 1963, a casualty of the same wave of closures that hollowed out branch lines across the country, but goods traffic, chiefly cattle bound for larger markets, kept the station working for another sixteen years until 1979. The surviving building combines the station master's house and ticket office under one roof, an L-plan two-storey structure in ashlar limestone with a Tudor-influenced Gothic Revival treatment: fleur-de-lis saddlestones on the gables, tall chimneystacks, a recessed porch, and windows set within chamfered limestone surrounds, some pointed, some square-headed, that give the whole front an unexpectedly churchy silhouette for what was essentially a working goods depot. A veranda once sheltered passengers waiting outside the ticket office, and the station master's door, reached up limestone steps, carries its own hoodmoulded arch, a small flourish on a building otherwise built for function. Together with the adjoining warehouse and cottage, it forms a coherent group that once anchored the local economy, giving Geashill a direct rail link to the cattle markets and goods networks that shaped so much of provincial Irish trade in this period.
