Belmont and Cloghan Railway Station, Ballingowan Glebe, Co. Offaly

Along a quiet road outside Belmont, the old station building has settled into domestic life, its two storeys and three bays giving little away from the front, until you notice the cut stone platform at the rear, its edge still finished with a moulded kerb, waiting for trains that stopped coming decades ago.

The station was built in 1884 on the Clara to Banagher line, a branch of the Great Southern and Western Railway that once threaded through this part of the midlands. It is a solid, unshowy piece of Victorian railway architecture: pitched and hipped slate roofs finished with terracotta ridge tiles, red brick chimneystacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods doing their quiet job of keeping the building dry. The walls are roughcast render over a smooth rendered plinth, drawn together at the top by a corbelled cornice banded in red brick, a detail that turns a plain wall into something with a bit of rhythm to it. Paired timber sash windows, set on stone sills, line the front, though the first floor now carries replacement casements from a later hand. The door keeps its original square-headed opening and gets a modest lift from the overlight above it, a small pane of glass set over the door frame to bring light into the hallway beyond, simple rather than showy, but well judged. A single-storey structure sits behind the main block, and it was here, and along the platform, that the daily business of the line, tickets, timetables, waiting, actually happened. The station closed in 1963, part of the broader contraction of Ireland's rural rail network in that period, and the building passed into private use, which is how it survives today.

What makes the site worth lingering on is less the house itself than what it still holds onto: the platform. Long after the tracks were lifted and the branch line faded from the map, the cut stone edge with its shaped kerb remains in place at the rear, a physical trace of where the rail bed once ran and where passengers once stood. It is a modest survival, easy to miss from the road, but it is the clearest evidence left that this quiet building once belonged to a much larger network stretching across the country.
