Enclosure, An Baile Ard, Co. Donegal

On a ledge along the northern flank of the Glencolumbkille valley in County Donegal sits a remarkable six-sided stone enclosure known as Garraí an Turais, or 'the pilgrimage field'.

This ancient site, measuring roughly 19.5 metres east to west and 16 metres north to south, appears to have been originally rectangular before a secondary extension was added to its southern side. The stone walls enclose what was clearly a place of spiritual significance, set amidst fair pasture land that's now surrounded by rougher terrain.

Within the enclosure stand three penitential cairns, each topped with stone slabs that bear witness to centuries of religious devotion. The first cairn forms a distinctive horseshoe shape, standing nearly 1.5 metres high, with a central slab marked by two simple crosses on its northwest face. The second cairn, similar in height, features a slab decorated with an intriguing geometric design; rectangular grooved divisions run along each edge of its northern face, suggesting careful craftsmanship and symbolic meaning.

The third and largest cairn measures almost 5 metres at its widest point and stands 1.2 metres tall, crowned by an uninscribed slab that some observers suggest has a vaguely cross-shaped profile. These stone monuments served as stations for pilgrims undertaking religious journeys, where acts of penance and prayer would have been performed. The site represents a tangible link to Ireland's long tradition of pilgrimage and penitential practice, preserving in stone the devotional landscape of medieval and early modern Donegal.
