Standing stone, Carndoagh, Co. Donegal

In the townland of Carndoagh, County Donegal, stands an ancient monolith that has weathered countless Irish winters.

This prehistoric standing stone rises 1.63 metres from the ground, with a base measuring 1.1 metres wide and a maximum thickness of 26 centimetres. Oriented along a north-south axis, the stone serves as a silent sentinel from Ireland's distant past.

What makes this particular stone especially intriguing are the cup-marks carved into both of its faces. These small, circular depressions were deliberately pecked into the stone surface, likely during the Bronze Age, though their exact purpose remains one of prehistoric Ireland's enduring mysteries. Some archaeologists suggest they may have served ritual purposes, acted as territorial markers, or held astronomical significance; others propose they could have been used for collecting rainwater for ceremonial use.

The stone forms part of Donegal's rich archaeological landscape, documented in the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, which catalogues field antiquities from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century. Standing stones like this one are found throughout Ireland, with over 400 examples recorded across the country. They offer tangible connections to the island's earliest inhabitants, who left few written records but marked the landscape with these enduring monuments that continue to inspire curiosity and speculation thousands of years later.
