Souterrain, Mullagheep, Co. Donegal

Hidden beneath the surface at Mullagheep in County Donegal lies a remarkable souterrain, a type of underground passage that speaks to Ireland's ancient past.

Though largely inaccessible today, a 15-metre section of this subterranean structure can still be traced through various surface openings. The passage runs east to west, featuring carefully constructed drystone walls topped with a lintel roof; a testament to the building skills of those who created it centuries ago.

The site has yielded intriguing archaeological evidence over the years. In 1889, antiquarian Kinahan documented discoveries that fire the imagination: traces of ancient fires and broken bones identified as belonging to the Irish elk, that magnificent creature that once roamed Ireland before its extinction around 11,000 years ago. Whether these elk bones were truly from the souterrain itself or perhaps from earlier deposits is a question that adds to the mystery of the place.

Today, the souterrain sits at the base of a steep, southeast-facing slope surrounded by decent pastureland, though parts of it have become overgrown with vegetation. Like many of Ireland's souterrains, which number in the hundreds across the country, this underground passage likely served multiple purposes for early medieval communities; perhaps as cold storage for food, a hiding place during raids, or even as a ritual space. Its partial visibility through surface openings offers tantalising glimpses into this hidden world beneath the Donegal countryside.
