Standing stone, Tullanree, Co. Donegal

In the countryside of County Donegal, the site at Tullanree presents an intriguing puzzle for archaeologists and historians alike.

When researcher Colhoun visited in 1943, he proposed that the substantial earthen mound and collection of large stones might mark the location of a 'Giant's Grave', a colloquial term for prehistoric megalithic tombs found throughout Ireland. However, subsequent investigation suggests a rather more mundane origin for these features; they appear to be the result of agricultural land clearance activities that took place sometime before Colhoun's visit.

The site's history is further complicated by cartographic evidence from the Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, which clearly marked a standing stone at this location. Today, however, identifying this particular stone with any certainty has proven impossible, leaving researchers to wonder whether it was removed, buried, or simply misidentified amongst the cleared field stones. This uncertainty is typical of many archaeological sites across rural Ireland, where centuries of farming activity have obscured or altered ancient monuments.

The Tullanree site was formally documented in the Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland, compiled by Eamon Cody and published by the Stationery Office in Dublin in 2002. The survey, which forms part of Volume VI covering County Donegal, includes references to earlier archaeological works by Lacy (1983) and records from both the Sites and Monuments Record (1987) and the Record of Monuments and Places (1995). These systematic surveys represent crucial efforts to catalogue and preserve knowledge of Ireland's prehistoric heritage, even when, as at Tullanree, the exact nature and significance of a site remains tantalisingly unclear.
