Enclosure, Moneymore (Newtowncunningham Ed), Co. Donegal

In the fields near Moneymore, County Donegal, aerial photography has revealed the ghostly outlines of an ancient settlement that once commanded this small hillock.

Cropmarks, those subtle variations in plant growth that betray buried archaeology, have exposed a circular enclosure measuring roughly 60 metres across. The site occupies what archaeologist J.K. St. Joseph described as "excellent land", suggesting our ancestors knew exactly what they were doing when they chose this spot for their settlement.

The circular enclosure isn't alone in these fields; further cropmarks hint at additional structures to the southeast, though these remain more elusive and harder to define. These patterns in the crops tell a story of considerable reorganisation of the field systems over time, with ancient boundaries and divisions becoming visible only from above when conditions are just right. The marks appear during dry spells when crops growing over buried stone walls or ditches struggle for moisture, creating a natural X-ray of the landscape's hidden past.

This particular site exemplifies how modern farming landscapes often conceal layers of history beneath their surface. The enclosure likely dates to the early medieval period or perhaps even earlier, when such circular settlements were common across Ireland. Without excavation, the exact nature of the site remains tantalisingly uncertain; it could have been a ringfort, an ecclesiastical enclosure, or perhaps an earlier prehistoric monument. What's clear from the aerial evidence is that this hilltop was once a focal point in the landscape, part of a broader pattern of settlement and land use that has long since vanished from view at ground level.
