Rock art, Magheranaul, Co. Donegal

Just two metres north of another marked stone in the Magheranaul area of County Donegal, you'll find a fascinating example of prehistoric rock art.

Eight cupmarks have been carved into a horizontal section of the same rock outcrop, their creation dating back thousands of years to when our ancestors left these enigmatic symbols across the Irish landscape.

The cupmarks themselves are distinctive; roughly pecked out of the stone rather than smoothly carved, they're notably deep and clustered close together. This particular style of execution, documented by archaeologist Van Hoek in 1988, suggests they were made with considerable effort, perhaps using stone tools to repeatedly strike the rock surface until these circular depressions were formed. The proximity of these markings to each other, as well as to the nearby stone identified as DON 21, hints at this location's significance to the people who created them.

While the exact meaning of cupmarks remains one of archaeology's enduring mysteries, their presence at Magheranaul adds to Donegal's rich collection of prehistoric art. These simple yet compelling marks connect us directly to the Bronze Age communities who once inhabited this landscape, leaving behind these permanent signatures that have weathered millennia of Irish seasons.
