Enclosure, Lackagh, Co. Donegal

On a terrace carved from a rocky ridge overlooking Gweebarra Bay, an ancient stone enclosure sits quietly in the pasture at Lackagh, County Donegal.

From this vantage point, visitors can see Portnoo beach and Inishkeel Island stretching out to the southeast, whilst the immediate landscape rises sharply behind the site with exposed rock outcroppings. The ground to the north slopes gently for about 100 metres before plummeting dramatically to meet the rocky shoreline below.

The enclosure forms a subrectangular shape, measuring roughly 24 metres east to west and 21 metres north to south, with softly rounded corners that speak to its considerable age. Its defining feature is a substantial stone bank, now covered in sod, that varies between 1.6 and 1.8 metres in width. Large stones and boulders, mostly hidden beneath centuries of grass growth, were incorporated into this boundary wall. The construction shows clever adaptation to the terrain; on the southern arc, builders set the wall against the natural slope of the ridge, creating an interior height of about a metre whilst the external face barely rises 10 centimetres above ground level. The eastern side, where the land falls away more gently, displays a low interior wall with a broadly slumped external slope.

Time and weather have taken their toll on the northern section, where the wall stands at its lowest point, measuring just 20 centimetres internally and 30 centimetres externally. Several narrow eroded breaks, each about a metre wide, puncture this section, though no clear original entrance can be identified. The western wall has been incorporated into a later field boundary, now ruined, which extends beyond the enclosure in both directions. Curiously, whilst the enclosure itself doesn't appear on the Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, the curving field wall that skirts its western side is clearly marked. Today, the interior remains level and grassy, a peaceful remnant of Ireland's distant past overlooking one of Donegal's most scenic coastlines.
