Ringfort (Cashel), Creevy, Co. Donegal

This ancient cashel in Creevy, County Donegal, stands as a weathered testament to Ireland's early medieval past.

With an internal diameter of 16 metres, the site consists of a rocky outcrop surrounded by the fragmentary remains of a stone wall that still reaches half a metre in height along its eastern and southern sections. While there's scant evidence suggesting an external wall may have once existed on the eastern side, centuries of stone robbing and natural collapse have left debris scattered across the entire site, making it difficult to determine the original layout with certainty.

The most intriguing feature of this cashel is the entrance to a stone-lined souterrain tucked into the western quadrant. These underground passages, common in Irish ringforts and cashels, were likely used for storage or refuge during raids. The main passage appears to run east to west, with two additional passages branching off in a north-south direction, creating a subterranean network beneath the fortification. The cashel's strategic position on elevated ground offers commanding views over Donegal Bay to the west and the Erne Estuary to the south, suggesting its builders carefully selected this location for both defensive advantages and territorial oversight.

Archaeological monitoring conducted in 2003 under excavation licence 03E0640 found no additional archaeological features in the immediate vicinity of the cashel. The site was first documented in the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983, which catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century. Today, the ruins continue to offer visitors a glimpse into how communities in early medieval Donegal organised their settlements and defended their territories.
