This oval earthwork, measuring between 30 and 33.5 metres in internal diameter, represents one of three similar enclosures built on neighbouring peninsulas jutting into the water. The earthen bank that once protected this settlement still stands at half a metre in height, though centuries of weather and vegetation have taken their toll on the structure.

The fort's builders chose their location wisely; the drumlin's crest appears to have been artificially levelled to create a suitable platform for construction, whilst the surrounding water provided natural defences on multiple sides. Two gaps in the earthwork, one facing west and another to the south, likely mark the original entrances where residents and visitors would have passed through the protective bank. These openings would have been crucial access points, possibly once fitted with wooden gates or other defensive structures that have long since disappeared.

Today, the site sits partially overgrown, its ancient purpose slowly being reclaimed by nature. This ringfort, known locally as a rath, dates from Ireland's early medieval period when such fortified farmsteads dotted the landscape. These weren't military installations but rather the homes of prosperous farming families who needed protection for themselves, their livestock, and their stored goods. The choice of this peninsular location, with its commanding views across the tidal lake and natural defensive advantages, speaks to the careful planning and local knowledge of its original inhabitants.
