Ringfort (Rath), Carrowmore or Glentogher, Co. Donegal

On the eastern slope of Trusk Beg, overlooking the Glentogher Valley in County Donegal, sits what remains of an ancient ringfort.

Originally mapped on the Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps as a subcircular fort with a single ring, this archaeological site has suffered considerable damage over the centuries. What survives today is a clay mound measuring roughly four metres across its top, standing in a grazing field that has seen generations of agricultural use.

The site represents one of Ireland's most common archaeological features; the ringfort, or rath as it's known in Irish. These circular earthwork enclosures were once home to farming families during the early medieval period, typically between the 5th and 12th centuries. Unfortunately, all traces of the defensive bank that would have originally surrounded this particular fort have been completely removed, likely through centuries of farming activity and natural erosion. The disturbance makes it difficult to determine the fort's original size or any details about its construction.

This description comes from the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. The survey documented field antiquities across the county spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, creating an invaluable record of Donegal's archaeological heritage. While this particular ringfort may appear unremarkable in its current state, it forms part of a wider landscape of settlement that tells the story of how people lived, farmed, and defended themselves in medieval Ireland.
