These fortifications were typically constructed during the Iron Age, taking advantage of steep cliffs on three sides whilst defenders only needed to build ramparts across the neck of the promontory. The strategic positioning allowed communities to monitor sea traffic, control access to harbours, and retreat to a defensible position when threatened.
