These artificial islands, built in lakes and marshes throughout Ireland and Scotland, served as fortified dwellings from the Bronze Age through to the medieval period. The Drumboghill crannog represents centuries of ingenuous engineering; its builders hauled stones, timber and earth to create a stable platform rising from the wetlands, where families could live safely surrounded by water.
