Stone Monuments
The standing stone at Fegart in County Donegal is one of Ireland's many prehistoric monuments awaiting full documentation by the Archaeological Survey of Ireland.
Like thousands of other ancient sites across the country, this solitary stone marker has stood sentinel over the Donegal landscape for millennia, its original purpose lost to time. Standing stones, or galláin as they're known in Irish, were erected during the Bronze Age and Iron Age for various reasons; some marked burial sites, others served as territorial boundaries, and many likely held ritual or astronomical significance for the communities that raised them.
