Graveslab, An Fhothair, Cill Ghabhlaigh, Co. Donegal

In the heart of Glencolumbkille valley, surrounded by fair pasture land, stands a modest cairn that forms part of an ancient pilgrimage route.

Measuring 3.6 metres from north to south, 2.3 metres from east to west, and rising to a height of 0.75 metres, this stone mound is topped with a distinctive flat slab set upright. The slab itself, measuring 88 centimetres by 43 centimetres and just 10 centimetres thick, marks this as the ninth station of St. Columbkille's turas, a traditional pattern of prayer stations that pilgrims would visit in sequence.

The turas, or pilgrimage circuit, dedicated to St. Columbkille (also known as St. Columba) has been walked by the faithful for centuries, though the exact age of this particular cairn and graveslab remains uncertain. Local tradition connects these features to early Christian worship in the valley, but archaeological evidence hasn't definitively established whether they date from the saint's era in the 6th century or were constructed later as the pilgrimage tradition developed.

This site, catalogued as DG080-015001 for the cairn and DG080-015002 for the graveslab, was documented during the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal conducted in 1983. The survey, which catalogued field antiquities from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, noted the cairn's position in what is now peaceful farmland, where it continues to serve as a tangible link to the valley's spiritual heritage and the enduring legacy of one of Ireland's most beloved saints.
