Bullaun stone, Straid (Straid Ed), Co. Donegal
Co. Donegal |
Holy Sites & Wells
In the townland of Straid in County Donegal sits a curious relic of Ireland's early Christian period; a bullaun stone that has weathered countless centuries.
These distinctive stones, found scattered across Ireland, feature one or more cup-shaped hollows carved into their surfaces. Whilst their exact purpose remains debated amongst archaeologists, they're generally believed to have served ritual or practical functions in medieval monastic communities, possibly for grinding grain, herbs, or minerals, or perhaps holding holy water for blessings and cures.
