Castlesheppard House, Creeragh, Co. Tipperary North

Castlesheppard House stands on a gentle hill in the rolling countryside of north Tipperary, its eighteenth-century façade concealing traces of a much older story.

Built as a modest two-storey, three-bay residence, the house appears unremarkable at first glance. However, historical records suggest that a tower once stood at the rear of the property, though no obvious remains are visible today. The only clues to this earlier structure are fragments of masonry that protrude from the back wall of the house; intriguingly, these wall sections were clearly added after the main building was constructed, as they're keyed directly into the rubble filling of what was once a blocked window.

The site takes its name from the Sheppard family, who likely held these lands during the medieval period when defensive towers were common features of the Irish landscape. Such towers served both as fortified residences and symbols of authority, often forming the nucleus around which later domestic buildings developed. The practice of incorporating or building against older fortifications was widespread across Ireland, as successive generations adapted ancient strongholds to meet changing needs and tastes.

Today, Castlesheppard House offers a fascinating example of architectural layering, where centuries of building, modification, and adaptation have created a complex historical puzzle. Whilst the tower mentioned in Bence-Jones's 1988 survey may have vanished from view, the mysterious wall fragments hint at the continuous occupation and evolution of this site, reminding us that Ireland's built heritage often conceals as much history as it reveals.
