Moated site, Ballinlough, Co. Tipperary North

The moated site at Ballinlough in North Tipperary presents an intriguing puzzle for those interested in Ireland's historical landscapes.

This rectangular enclosure, measuring 43 metres from southeast to northwest and 28 metres from northeast to southwest, sits on poorly drained land along a north-facing slope in an upland area. The site's defining feature is its well-preserved earthen bank, standing flat-topped and lined with trees. The bank itself is about a metre wide, rising 1.3 metres on the interior side and between one to three metres on the exterior, creating a formidable boundary around the enclosed space.

What makes this site particularly interesting is the 12-metre-wide gap in the northwestern section of the bank, which would have served as the main entrance to the enclosure. Despite its resemblance to medieval moated sites found elsewhere in Ireland, the exceptional preservation of the earthworks suggests a much more recent origin. The pristine condition of the banks, complete with their sharp edges and undisturbed profiles, points towards construction during the 19th century rather than the medieval period typically associated with such features.

This dating places the Ballinlough enclosure within the context of Ireland's 19th-century landscape improvements, when landowners frequently created ornamental features and agricultural enclosures as part of estate management. The choice of location on poorly drained, north-facing land might seem unusual, but such sites were often selected for specific agricultural purposes or as part of broader landscaping schemes. While it may not be a genuine medieval monument, the site nonetheless represents an important piece of Ireland's more recent rural heritage, compiled and documented by researchers Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien in September 2008.
