Windmill, Windmill Lands, Co. Dublin

A housing estate in County Dublin bears the name Windmill Lands, and that name is essentially all that survives of what once stood here.

On raised grassland to the north of the Ward River, a windmill occupied this site long enough to be captured on John Rocque's map of 1760, one of the most detailed cartographic surveys of eighteenth-century Ireland. By the time the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch maps were produced in the nineteenth century, the structure had already been reduced to a stump, noted as such by the surveyors with the matter-of-fact precision that characterises those early OS sheets. After that, even the stump disappeared.

Rocque's 1760 map is a useful landmark for dating the windmill's active life. The fact that it appears there at all suggests it was a functioning or at least recognisable structure at mid-century, likely used for grinding grain, a common purpose for tower windmills built on elevated ground where they could catch a reliable wind. The Ward River, running below the raised grassland on which the mill stood, would have provided a natural boundary to the site. The reference to the OS designation of 'windmill stump' is noted by Ní Ghabhláin in 1987, drawing on those earlier survey records to place the site within a broader archaeological picture of the area.

There is nothing to see here now. The site has been entirely built over by a housing development, and no above-ground trace of the windmill remains. What makes the place worth noting is precisely that erasure, and the small persistence of the name in the landscape. For anyone interested in how Rocque's map documents the working infrastructure of eighteenth-century County Dublin, the cartographic record itself is the more rewarding visit. The map is held in various archives and digital collections, and tracing what it shows against what now exists on the ground is often a more revealing exercise than the ground itself can offer.
