In St. Catherine's Park in County Dublin, two adjoining holy wells sit close together, and the upper of the pair once carried something unusual: a carved stone head fixed to its higher arch. Holy wells are common enough across Ireland, often associated with early Christian saints and local patterns of devotion, but the addition of a carved stone head suggests a layer of folk belief that ran alongside or beneath official religion.
