Stone head, St. Catherine’S Park, Co. Dublin

What marks this site now is precisely what is no longer there.

In St. Catherine's Park in County Dublin, two adjoining holy wells sit close together, and the upper of the pair once carried something unusual: a carved stone head fixed to its higher arch. Holy wells are common enough across Ireland, often associated with early Christian saints and local patterns of devotion, but the addition of a carved stone head suggests a layer of folk belief that ran alongside or beneath official religion. Stone heads have deep roots in Irish and Celtic tradition, sometimes thought to possess protective or apotropaic qualities. This one is gone, and has been for decades.

The folklorist Caoimhín Ó Danachair noted in 1958 that the stone head had already been stolen more than once by that point, suggesting it attracted the kind of attention that tends to work against preservation. Whether it was taken for its curiosity, its perceived power, or simple opportunism, the record does not say. What it does confirm is that by the mid-twentieth century the head was a known feature of the site, fixed to the arch of the upper well, and that its removal was not a single event but a repeated one. It has long since disappeared entirely from the structure.

The wells themselves remain within St. Catherine's Park, a public green space in the Leixlip area. Visitors looking for the carved head will not find it, but the wells are still present, and the upper one, catalogued in the Archaeological Survey of Ireland, retains the form of a structure that once held something more. The site is modest and easy to overlook, which is perhaps why the head survived as long as it did before finally vanishing for good. If you are familiar with the general layout of the park, the wells are findable without much difficulty, though there is little on-site interpretation to explain what was once attached to them.
