Ringfort, Astagob, Co. Dublin

Somewhere on a County Dublin golf course, half-buried in undergrowth, sits a circular earthen platform that most players probably walk past without a second glance.

It measures around 25 metres in diameter and rises to roughly 1.75 metres in height, dimensions modest enough to be mistaken for a natural rise in the fairway, yet deliberate enough to suggest a much older purpose entirely.

The site at Astagob is tentatively identified as a platform ringfort, a category of early medieval enclosure in which the interior ground level was raised above the surrounding terrain, possibly for drainage or to elevate a dwelling above a waterlogged landscape. Ringforts, known in Irish as ráth or lios depending on their construction, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically associated with farming families of some standing. Platform variants are less common and, where they survive, can be harder to read in the field precisely because the raised interior can erode to look simply like a low mound. This particular example has suffered damage along its east side, and the whole is heavily overgrown, which makes confident identification difficult. The record was compiled by Geraldine Stout and updated by Christine Baker, with the entry uploaded in January 2015.

Because the site lies within the grounds of a golf course, access is not straightforward in the way it might be for a monument on open farmland or a waymarked trail. Anyone hoping to see it should make enquiries with the relevant club before visiting, and should expect the vegetation to obscure much of the platform's profile even at the best of times. The damaged eastern arc means the clearest sense of the original circuit is likely to be found on the western and northern sides. It is the kind of site that rewards patience and a willingness to read the land carefully rather than to expect a dramatic monument.
