House – medieval, Dublin South City, Co. Dublin

Most medieval structures that survive in Dublin do so as ruins, fragments, or at least as named monuments with some kind of plaque or protective railing.

This particular house, located somewhere in the south city, has none of that visibility. It exists, at least in the scholarly record, as a dot on a map and a reference in a footnote, which gives it a peculiar kind of presence: acknowledged but anonymous, documented but largely forgotten.

The building appears on the Friends of Medieval Dublin Map, produced in 1978 as part of an effort to record and draw attention to the surviving physical fabric of the medieval city. That project was significant because Dublin's medieval core had suffered considerable losses over the preceding decades through demolition and redevelopment, and the map represented a push by scholars and concerned citizens to make what remained legible to the public and to planners. The house is also cited by Bradley and King in their 1987 catalogue of medieval urban sites, listed as entry number 103 in the third volume. Beyond those two references, the documentary trail is thin. No owner is named, no construction date is given, and the precise address is not recorded in the available notes.

For anyone with a serious interest in medieval Dublin, the Friends of Medieval Dublin Map remains a useful starting point, and copies or derivatives of it have appeared in various academic publications over the years. The Bradley and King volume, part of a broader survey of Irish historic towns, can be consulted in larger public and university libraries. Whether the structure itself is still standing, incorporated into a later building, or long since gone is unclear from the available record. That ambiguity is itself part of what makes sites like this interesting; the medieval city was layered over rather than erased outright, and fabric from the thirteenth or fourteenth century occasionally persists inside walls that look entirely modern from the street.
