Quay, Bullock, Co. Dublin

A narrow cleft in the granite coastline south of Dublin, the old quay at Bullock is easy to miss, and that is rather the point.

The creek opens to the north-west, sheltered by the hard igneous rock that characterises this stretch of the Dublin Bay shore, and it speaks quietly of a maritime past that predates almost everything built around it today.

The earliest firm record of a harbour on this spot comes from a drawing made in 1699 by Francis Place, an English artist known for topographical studies of towns and coastlines across Britain and Ireland. That a draughtsman thought the site worth recording at the close of the seventeenth century suggests it was already a working place, not merely a scenic inlet. The reference appears in De Courcy's 1996 survey of the area, which situates the Bullock creek within the broader history of small coastal landings along the Dublin coastline. The granite geology here is not incidental; this stone was quarried extensively along the south Dublin coast and coastal access points like this one would have served as loading points for material moved by sea.

Bullock sits within the present-day suburb of Dalkey, and the area around the old harbour can be reached on foot from Dalkey village or along the coast road. The creek itself is modest and the harbour infrastructure, such as it is, is small in scale. Low tide offers the clearest sense of the inlet's shape and the way it cuts into the rock. Visitors who know to look for it will find the geometry of the place, that north-westerly orientation carving into the granite, more legible when the water has pulled back and the lines of the old quay are exposed.
