Cross, Bremore, Co. Dublin

A carved stone cross once stood outdoors at Bremore, fixed to the top of a decorated lintel close to the ruins of a late-medieval church.

That arrangement, a Crucifixion carving mounted on a lintel rather than rising from the ground on its own shaft, is quietly unusual, and the fact that the cross is no longer there at all makes the site stranger still.

The carving dates from the late medieval period and depicts the Crucifixion, a subject common enough in Irish ecclesiastical stonework of that era but rarely surviving in such a specific setting. The lintel itself, catalogued as a decorated architectural feature associated with the nearby church remains, suggests that Bremore once held a more elaborate complex of religious structures than the surviving ruins now imply. In 2009, concerns about the condition or security of the cross led to its removal; it was taken into storage at Ardgillan Castle, a nineteenth-century house a short distance along the north Dublin coastline. The records were compiled by Geraldine Stout and subsequently updated by Christine Baker in 2014.

Bremore sits on the north Co. Dublin coast near Balbriggan, and the church remains and associated lintel are accessible as part of a broader archaeological landscape in the area. Visitors who make their way to the site will find the decorated lintel still in place, though the cross that once crowned it is absent. Ardgillan Castle, where the carving is now held, is a publicly accessible demesne managed by Fingal County Council, and it is worth enquiring there about whether the cross can be viewed, since items in storage are not always on display. The lintel on its own is worth examining closely; the decoration carved into it indicates that even without the cross, the stonework at Bremore retains genuine medieval detail.
