Barrow (Ring Barrow), Lugg, Co. Dublin

Three low circular mounds sit in a row on a ridge behind Glenaraneen House in Lugg, Co. Dublin, enclosed within a single oval earthwork and ringed by Scots pine.

What makes the arrangement quietly remarkable is not any single monument but the grouping itself, three ring barrows contained within a shared enclosure, a configuration that speaks to deliberate, organised use of this elevated ground over a long period.

Ring barrows are a type of prehistoric funerary monument, typically consisting of a low central mound surrounded by a circular ditch, or fosse, and an outer bank. Here, the three barrows vary slightly in scale. The northernmost has an external diameter of around 11 metres, the central barrow reaches 12 metres, and the southernmost is the largest at 14 metres across, with a bank standing 1.2 metres high and an inner fosse roughly 2.5 metres wide and 0.45 metres deep. All three sit within a larger oval enclosure measuring 36 metres north to south and 24 metres wide, defined by its own bank and outer ditch. The southern barrow appears to share its bank with the wall of this enclosing area, suggesting the outer boundary and the monuments within it were conceived as a coherent whole. The site was compiled and described by archaeologists Geraldine Stout and Padraig Clancy.

The ridge location is a practical one to understand before visiting. The ground drops sharply towards the Slade valley, and there is a stream to the south of the site, so the approach from lower ground can be uneven underfoot. The tree planting that defines the barrows now forms part of their character; Scots pine lines the banks of the ring barrows themselves, while thorn has been planted around the outer enclosure. These plantings make the monuments easier to read from a distance than many comparable earthworks, giving a visible outline to shapes that elsewhere tend to blur into the surrounding landscape.
