Ringfort (Rath), Ballyowen, Co. Limerick

Somewhere in the low-lying fields of Ballyowen, County Limerick, a circle of earth sits so thoroughly reclaimed by briars and organic debris that it takes a moment to recognise it as something deliberate.

What you are looking at, if you can make it out at all beneath the vegetation, is a rath, the most common type of early medieval settlement in Ireland. A rath is simply a ringfort enclosed by one or more earthen banks, typically built to protect a farmstead and its animals. This particular example measures roughly 35 metres in diameter and, despite its anonymity in the landscape, retains enough of its original form to reward careful attention.

The site was recorded and compiled by Denis Power, with notes uploaded in August 2011. The earthen bank that defines the enclosure survives to an internal height of around 0.4 metres and an external height of 0.75 metres, and is accompanied by a fosse, meaning an external ditch, that runs to a width of approximately 3.4 metres and a depth of 0.75 metres. The fosse is best preserved on the south-southwest to north arc, though it has been disturbed at the eastern side where a field drain cuts across it on an east-west axis. There is also evidence that the fosse was recut at some point along its better-preserved stretch, suggesting the enclosure was maintained or modified over time. A dip approximately 2 metres wide in the bank at the south-southeast may mark the position of an original entrance.

The site sits on marshy, undulating pasture, and the terrain itself gives some sense of why it is so easily overlooked. The bank is heavily masked by dense vegetation, and the interior is described as completely covered with briars, making any close inspection of the ground surface difficult. The fosse, where it survives, offers the clearest sense of the original scale and effort involved in constructing the enclosure. Visitors approaching across the surrounding fields should be prepared for wet ground and limited visibility into the monument itself. The site does not announce itself.
