In Ballynoe, County Limerick, a ringfort once occupied a slight rise in open, gently rolling pasture, just east of a metalled farm track. Today, the ground gives nothing away. The enclosure has been levelled, and when the site was last inspected, there was nothing visible to indicate that anything had ever been there at all.

A rath, to use the Irish term, is a circular earthwork enclosure, typically defined by an earthen bank and external ditch, built during the early medieval period and used as a farmstead or defended homestead. They are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, with tens of thousands recorded across the country. This particular example was documented on the 1924 Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a sub-circular enclosure roughly twenty metres in diameter, which would place it at the smaller end of the scale. That map record is now, in practical terms, its primary evidence of existence. The site notes, compiled by Denis Power and uploaded in March 2013, confirm that by the time of inspection, the monument had been levelled entirely.

For anyone curious enough to visit, the location is straightforward to approach, lying in open pasture immediately east of a farm track in Ballynoe. But there is little to see on the ground, and that is rather the point of coming here. What remains is the absence itself, and the knowledge that the 1924 OS map caught something that the landscape no longer holds. It is a useful reminder that archaeological survival is never guaranteed, and that the record of a place can outlast the place entirely.
