Enclosure, Greenmount, Co. Limerick

At Greenmount in County Limerick, an oval earthwork sits on a rise in the landscape, largely swallowed by trees and scrub.

It measures roughly 75 metres north to south and 60 metres east to west, which makes it a substantial feature, yet most of it has become invisible to the casual eye. Only on the eastern side, where the ground opens into rough pasture, does the enclosure reveal itself clearly: a scarped edge, meaning a deliberately cut or shaped slope in the earth, running about 24 metres wide and standing 1.1 metres high. That surviving scarp is enough to confirm that this is a constructed monument rather than a trick of the terrain.

The enclosure was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map published in 1924, where it appears as a distinct oval outline. Compiled by Denis Power and uploaded to the record in April 2013, the site entry notes that the monument sits on elevated ground within an area of rough pasture and woodland. Enclosures of this general type in Ireland range considerably in date and function, from early medieval ringforts, which were enclosed farmsteads typically defended by a bank and ditch, to earlier ceremonial or settlement sites. The notes do not assign a specific period or use to this particular example, and without excavation or further survey, the question of what the enclosure was built for, and by whom, remains open.

The eastern scarp is the most accessible and readable part of the site. Approaching from that side, across the rough pasture, a visitor can follow the slope of the cut edge and get a reasonable sense of the enclosure's scale and original form. The woodland that covers most of the interior and the western portions makes a full circuit difficult, and the dense vegetation obscures what may be further earthwork detail. Late autumn or winter, when leaf cover is reduced, would offer the clearest view of any remaining structural traces within the trees. The site sits on private land in rough agricultural use, so enquiring locally before visiting is advisable.
