Earthwork, Leagane, Co. Limerick

A roughly circular scar in a Limerick pasture, visible from satellite imagery but barely legible on the ground, marks what was probably the defensive enclosure of a long-vanished castle.

The earthwork sits in farmland in the townland of Leagane, just twenty metres south of the boundary with Tobernea Middle, and what was once a raised platform has been levelled to the point where it now survives chiefly as a cropmark, the kind of faint, dry-season ghost that only aerial or satellite photography can reliably read.

The 1897 edition of the Ordnance Survey Ireland twenty-five-inch map records the feature as a raised, roughly circular platform approximately twenty-nine metres in diameter, defined by a scarp and a fosse. A fosse is simply a defensive ditch, typically dug to throw up the bank or platform beside it. The working interpretation is that this earthwork represents the remains of an earthen bawn associated with Tobernea Castle, recorded separately in the national monuments database. A bawn was a walled or embanked enclosure adjoining a castle or tower house, used to protect livestock and provide a defended outer yard. Within fifty-five metres to the north-north-west lies Tobernea holy well, suggesting this small cluster of monuments, castle, enclosure, and sacred water source, formed a meaningful local landscape over several centuries. The site was compiled in the national record by Martin Fitzpatrick and uploaded in August 2021.

The earthwork lies in working pasture, so access would require landowner permission. There is little to see at ground level given the degree of levelling, but visitors with an interest in landscape archaeology might find it worth comparing the 1897 Ordnance Survey mapping against current Google Earth imagery, where the circular cropmark remains legible as a pale ring against the field. The nearby holy well to the north-north-west provides a more tangible point of reference for anyone exploring the wider townland.
