Fulacht fia, Mountcollins, Co. Limerick

In a patch of marshy pasture beside the River Feale in County Limerick, a low kidney-shaped mound sits quietly in the landscape, betraying almost nothing of what it once was.

It measures roughly 21 metres north to south and just over 11 metres east to west, rising only 0.6 metres from the ground, and is composed almost entirely of burnt and fire-cracked material. This is a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in considerable numbers across Ireland, typically consisting of a trough dug into the ground, a hearth for heating stones, and a mound of discarded burnt stone that accumulated over repeated use. The stones would be heated in a fire and dropped into a water-filled trough to bring it to a boil, a method that is surprisingly efficient and has been successfully replicated by archaeologists.

The mound here, recorded and compiled by Denis Power and uploaded to the national record in August 2011, sits approximately 80 metres from the western bank of the Feale, a location entirely consistent with what is known about fulachta fia as a class of monument. They are almost invariably found near water sources, which were essential to their function, and frequently in low-lying or boggy ground, which has helped preserve them over the millennia. What makes this particular spot quietly notable is that it does not stand alone. A second fulacht fia lies just 40 metres to the north, suggesting that this stretch of riverbank was a place of repeated or sustained activity during prehistory, used perhaps by different groups at different times, or possibly in tandem for larger-scale food preparation.

The site sits in working farmland and is not formally presented to visitors in any way. The marshy character of the ground means conditions underfoot can be soft, particularly after rain, and the mound itself is unassuming enough that it could easily be passed without notice. The kidney shape, with its opening facing west, is the clearest visible feature, though the slight rise and the dark, stony composition of the mound are what distinguish it from the surrounding pasture on closer inspection. Those with an interest in prehistoric landscape archaeology may find the pairing of two such monuments within such a short distance of each other more arresting than either mound would be on its own.
