Earthwork, Reenavanna West, Co. Limerick

On a north-facing slope in County Limerick, in a stretch of rough pasture between two river valleys, there sits an earthwork that is easier to see from the air than from the ground.

The monument at Reenavanna West is penannular in shape, meaning it forms an almost complete ring, open at one end, in this case towards the south-west. Tree cover has grown over it thickly enough that aerial imagery reveals its oval outline more clearly than any ground-level approach would suggest, giving it the quality of something that has quietly absorbed its surroundings over centuries.

The site occupies an interesting topographical position, looking north over the valley of the Aughvaria River and south over that of the Gortnageragh River. This kind of placement on an interfluve, a ridge of ground between two watercourses, is not uncommon among early earthwork monuments in Ireland, and may reflect concerns about drainage, visibility, or the demarcation of territory. The form itself, a raised platform or enclosing bank open to one side, has parallels with enclosures associated with early medieval settlement and activity, though no specific date has been recorded for this example. The Ordnance Survey 25-inch map, produced in the late nineteenth century, already depicted the penannular outline, confirming the monument was recognisable in the landscape well before modern aerial survey brought it into sharper focus. Records compiled by Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly, uploaded in July 2020, also note a well positioned roughly twelve metres to the south of the main earthwork, a detail that adds a layer of interest given how often wells and enclosures appear in proximity at early Irish sites.

The earthwork sits in rough pasture, which means the ground underfoot is likely uneven, and the tree growth identified in Digital Globe and Google Earth imagery from 2011 to 2014 suggests a tangle of vegetation around the monument itself. Anyone making their way to it should expect limited visibility at ground level and should consult the aerial images beforehand to get a sense of the overall shape. The well to the south is worth looking for separately, as it may not be immediately obvious from the earthwork itself. There is no visitor infrastructure here; this is agricultural land, and access would require the usual courtesies extended to working farmland in rural Ireland.
