Enclosure, Lisheennaheltia, Co. Galway

In the low-lying grassland of Lisheennaheltia, in County Galway, there is a place that exists more on paper than on the ground.

The first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, produced in the nineteenth century, recorded a circular enclosure roughly thirty metres across, distinguished at the time by a ring of trees. Today, nothing of it can be seen at the surface. The trees are gone, the earthwork has vanished into the pasture, and what the mapmakers once carefully traced has been entirely consumed by the landscape.

Circular enclosures of this kind are a familiar feature of the Irish countryside, most often the remains of a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead typically dating from the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD. They were usually formed by an earthen bank and ditch encircling a domestic space, and they appear in enormous numbers across Ireland, though many have been levelled by centuries of agriculture. At Lisheennaheltia, the tree cover visible to the nineteenth-century surveyors suggests the site survived long enough to become a distinct feature in the field, the kind of circular copse that farmers sometimes left standing out of habit or superstition. Researchers including Knight and Conway, working in the 1970s and 1980s, noted the site but could find no standing remains by that point.

What is left, then, is essentially a cartographic ghost: a circle on an old map, a name in an inventory, a location in a field that gives no outward sign of what it once was. That gap between the historical record and the visible landscape is, in its own quiet way, the whole story of the place.
