Ringfort (Rath), Kilcloony, Co. Galway

On a ridge summit in Kilcloony, County Galway, a low and largely overlooked earthwork sits in open grassland, its original form only partially legible to the eye.

What survives is a D-shaped rath, the common Irish term for a roughly circular or oval ringfort defined by earthen banks and ditches, measuring roughly 30 metres east to west and 25.5 metres north to south. Two banks once enclosed the interior, separated by a fosse, the shallow trench dug to throw up the material for the banks themselves. The inner bank can be traced from the north-east around through the south to the south-west, though part of it has been absorbed into a later field boundary running from the north-east to the south-east. The outer bank is better preserved in the south-eastern and western arcs, giving the whole enclosure its surviving, if battered, shape.

Raths of this kind were typically built and occupied during the early medieval period in Ireland, broadly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, functioning as enclosed farmsteads for a single family or small household. The double-bank arrangement at Kilcloony would have offered a modest but meaningful degree of additional security or social status, since the effort required to construct a second circuit was considerable. The site carries a local tradition of a clochán bó gréine within its interior, a souterrain or underground stone-built passage, referenced in the county record under the identifier GA016-059001. Souterrains, as these underground chambers are known, were constructed from dry-laid stone and were used variously for storage, refuge, or ventilation of associated structures above ground. The tradition of one lying beneath this particular rath has not been formally confirmed at the surface level, which adds a small layer of uncertainty to the site's character.
