Ringfort (Rath), Killavoher, Co. Galway

A slight rise in a flat field is sometimes all that remains of what was once a family's entire world.

At Killavoher in County Galway, a subcircular rath sits on just such a gentle elevation above surrounding grassland, its outline measuring roughly 39 metres northeast to southwest and 34 metres northwest to southeast. The enclosure is poorly preserved overall, but its southern arc still holds something legible: an inner scarp, a fosse (a defensive ditch), and an outer bank survive in reasonable condition from the southeast, around through south, to the southwest. Two roads have cut through the enclosing elements at the north-northwest and east-northeast, which accounts for much of what has been lost.

Raths, also called ringforts, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically dating from around the sixth to the twelfth century. They were built by farming families as enclosed homesteads, the earthen banks and ditches serving less as military fortifications than as boundaries that kept livestock in and wolves or rival neighbours out. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, from near-perfect raised circles visible from the road to traces so faint they require a low winter sun or a drone photograph to read at all. The Killavoher example falls somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. The monument is notable in one small technical respect: it straddles two Ordnance Survey map sheets, extending onto sheet 18 as well as the sheet on which it is primarily recorded, suggesting it sits near the edge of a mapped boundary as well as on a topographical one.

The best-preserved portion of the fosse and outer bank, running along the southern side, is the obvious place to begin reading the site. The elevated position, modest as it is, would have made practical sense to whoever settled here, offering both drainage and a view across the surrounding flat ground.
