Ringfort (Rath), Woodfield, Co. Galway

A modern road runs straight through the middle of this ancient enclosure, bisecting it at both the east and west, which gives some sense of how thoroughly the monument has been absorbed into the working landscape around it.

What survives of the ringfort at Woodfield sits on a south-facing slope rising gently from otherwise level grassland, and only a portion of it remains legible to the eye: a bank of earth and stone curving from the north-west through north to north-east, and a scarp, a low slope or cut in the ground marking the old boundary, running from the east-south-east to the south-east. Beyond those fragments, nothing visible remains at the surface.

Ringforts, known in Irish as ráth when defined by earthen banks, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically enclosing a homestead and its associated structures within a roughly circular boundary. This example measures approximately 48.3 metres in diameter, placing it within the middle range for such sites. A reference from around 1975, cited by Knight, records the monument in the condition broadly consistent with what is described today, suggesting its deterioration had already advanced considerably by that point. What makes its situation at Woodfield particularly notable is not just the damage from road-cutting, but the proximity of a second ringfort of the same type lying roughly 300 metres to the west-south-west, a reminder that these enclosures were rarely isolated features but part of a wider pattern of early settlement across the landscape.
